The understanding of "middle-class income" varies across the U.S.

A recent study by SmartAsset using U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 1-year American Community Survey data shows the income needed to be middle class in each state. The results are surprising.

1) Maryland: To be middle class here, you need around $98,461. This is the highest in the nation. The cost of living is a big factor.

2) Mississippi: Here, you only need about $52,985. This is the lowest threshold.

3) Austin, Texas : In this city, middle class households earn between $60,995 and $183,002 to be middle class, which is quite a large range.

These differences highlight how local economies shape the middle-class experience. Inflation and economic changes make it harder to reach this status.

Understanding these income ranges shows the importance of local economic conditions.

(This uses Pew Research’s definition of middle income: two-thirds to double the median household income.)
